I look back on a time when I couldn’t see a way forward, I
was stuck; the past had a hold of me that wouldn’t let go because my mindset
was all wrong, I focussed on the negative, and not the positive. I didn’t set my mind on things above, but on
the things of the world that can distract from the truth.
‘Look to the Lord and his strength; seek his face always.’ Psalm 105:4
Change is a natural course of our lives, it comes in many
ways, shapes, or forms. Sometimes not in
the ways we expected. The change could
be for the better, or for the worse but it defines who we are going forward
with our lives. If the change is worse
than you ever imagined, your first thought is to run from it, some might face it
head on, and be the overcomer, then there are some that are on a bridge in
between it all, it can be overwhelming whether it’s a new job, relationship,
school, any area of your life you can feel overcome and you know that change is
going to happen soon. It’s scary! The thing is though in all this we see it
from our own perspective and understanding, the worst might actually be the
best but we can’t see the bigger picture, there is only one that can, and that
is God. What we think is best often
isn’t actually right, God knows us better than we know ourselves, he knit us
together in our mothers whom, he named every hair on our heads, he created the
world and everyone in it, he knows us, but do we know him, do we trust him?
‘We wait in hope for the Lord; he is our help and our
shield. In him our hearts rejoice, for
we trust in his holy name.’ Psalm 33:20-21
I remember at school there was a talk our teacher gave and
at the end he asked that daunting question to a bunch of fourteen-year olds, ‘what
do you want to be when you grow up?’
Naturally you start to think, then panic, you prepare an answer, some
know first-hand; maybe their parents have influenced their decision in the
process, or they’ve already discovered a passion for something which is
fantastic, but then there are those who come up with an answer… sometimes it’s
ridiculous, but it’s an answer and they start to dwell on it, overthink it, and
it becomes a worry. ‘My life is going to
change, the real world is calling, and I don’t know what’s going to happen in
the next part of my life,’ most of us can relate to having these thoughts which
is a natural response.
‘This is the day that the Lord has made; we will rejoice and
be glad in it.’ Psalm 118:24
People can often fear what they don't understand, and many
of us won't understand time and likely never will. It’s something that we are
used to, like everyday things that we see. If you hear many people give an answer to a
question saying, ‘In Gods time.’ In Gods
time this will happen, because Gods timing is perfect.
You can often look back and think, ‘I could have done this
differently', but why? What's done is done, and it was meant to happen that
way, and was always going to happen that way because God planned it to happen
that way for you to grow, learn and change. Then many of us will look to the future having
hopes, dreams, and aspirations that we wish to achieve. When God pushes you to the edge of difficulty,
trust him fully because two things can happen; either he’ll catch you when you
fall or he’ll teach you how to fly.
‘Have I not commanded you?
Be strong and courageous. Do not
be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you
wherever you go.’ Joshua 1:9
Time is something that cannot be controlled, and it has
always been, and always will be there. Nothing can change time. The past will
stay the past, and the present is where we are now, doing what we are doing,
the future remains uncertain. God knows
the destination for everyone’s lives, right now we’re on the journey, on the
road so long to parts that are unknown to us.
Who is driving your life and who is the backseat driver? Is God at the front, or are you?
‘Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of
our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its
shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.’ Hebrews 12:2
Change can come in the blink of an eye, everything you once
knew might not be what you thought it was, it challenges us, excites us,
terrifies us; sometimes its an obstacle you have to face, a trial for you to
conquer like David taking on Goliath. In
these trials sometimes you have to just be still, a song from the worship group
Hillsong comes to mind, ‘I will be still and know you are God… when the oceans
rise and thunders roar…’ God has it handled, God is fighting our battles. Don’t look back at past mistakes or forward
in worries for the future, it is so easy to do this but the word of God which
is truth tells us, ’No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through
him who loved us.’
Jesus died on the
cross for us, the magnitude of his love knows no bounds, he humbled himself to
death on the cross to save us and bring us salvation, there is none greater
than he. He can do immeasurably more
than we could ever ask or imagine. We do
not have to worry about tomorrow for tomorrow will worry about itself, it’s
just our natural human response to worry and sometimes it’s over nothing. There will always be questions, there will
always be change, but one thing remains, and that it that is God is eternal, he
has and will always be; he is Immanuel (God with us), Jehovah Shalom (the Lord
of peace), El Shaddai (Lord God almighty).
There is only one way, Gods way, there is only one truth, Gods truth. Follow his ways, listen and learn to what he
is directing you to do. Throw a punch in
the air and accept the truth that God is always there, ever interceding, ever
faithful, he’ll never leave you nor forsake you. Any changes that come know that it will be
okay because he’s always for you never against you.
‘Be still and know that I am God.’ Psalm 46:10
